NDTistheabbreviationofNon-destructivetesting.NDTreferstotheimplementationofatestingmethodformaterialsorworkpiecesthatdoesnotdamageoraffectitsfutureperformanceoruse.ThroughtheuseofNDT,defectscanbefoundinsideandonthesurfaceofthematerialorworkpiece,thegeometriccharacteristicsanddimensionsoftheworkpiececanbemeasured,andtheinternalcomposition,structure,physicalpropertiesandstatusofthematerialorworkpiececanbedetermined.DTNDTcanbeusedinproductdesign,materialselection,manufacturing,finishedproductinspection,in-serviceinspection(maintenance),etc.,andcanplayanoptimalrolebetweenqualitycontrolandcostreduction.NDTalsohelpsensurethesafeoperationand/oreffectiveuseofproducts.NDTcontainsmanymethodsthatcanbeeffectivelyapplied.ThemostcommonlyusedNDTmethodsare:radiographicinspection,ultrasonicinspection,eddycurrentinspection.Testing,magneticparticletesting,penetrationtesting,visualtesting,leaktesting,acousticemissiontesting,radiographictesting,etc.BecausevariousNDTmethodshavetheirownscopeandlimitations,newNDTmethodshavebeencontinuouslydevelopedandapplied.Ingeneral,aslongasitmeetsthebasicdefinitionofNDT,anyphysical,chemicalorotherpossibletechnicalmeanscanbedevelopedintoanNDTmethod.InChina,thetermnondestructivetestingwasfirstcalledflawdetectionornondestructivetesting,anditsdifferentmethodsarealsocalledflawdetection,suchasraydetection,ultrasonicdetection,magneticparticledetection,penetrationdetectionandsoon.Thistermorwritingiswidelycirculatedandhasbeenusedtothisday,anditsusagerateisnolessthanThetermnon-destructivetesting.
